RADAR is an acronym for Radio Detection And Ranging. This technology uses radio waves to pinpoint the location and calculate the distance of objects, including those that may not be visible to the naked eye. RADAR can also determine the velocity of a moving object.
The radar emits radio waves that bounce off objects in the environment and return to the sensor. It measures the time required for those waves to return to determine the distance to each object. It can also detect object speed by measuring the frequency shift of the returning radio waves, known as the Doppler effect.
Once captured, the data is processed by an onboard computational unit to create a 2D representation of the surrounding terrain. This mapped environment then informs the vehicle’s autonomous driving system and guides its navigational decisions.

The Challenge

RTK, or Real-Time Kinematic positioning, is a sophisticated technology that significantly enhances the accuracy of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) positioning. While conventional GNSS receivers, such as those relying on GPS, provide locational accuracy within a range of 2–4 meters, RTK technology narrows this down to remarkable centimeter-level precision.
The architecture of the RTK system is built around three key components: a stationary base station, a mobile receiver known as the rover, and a dedicated data link connecting them. For more dynamic mapping scenarios, a handheld mapper can also be incorporated. The base station maintains a fixed position as an essential reference point, while the rover is attached to vehicles or other moving objects. One base station can communicate with multiple rovers simultaneously.
The base station sends corrections to Slopehelper. This additional data counteracts potential discrepancies in GNSS information caused by atmospheric and ionospheric variations, nearby structures and changing weather conditions.
To reach centimeter-level precision, the base station generates correction data and transmits it to the rover in real time through a dedicated Wi-Fi network. The rover incorporates these corrections into its GNSS calculations, ensuring exceptional positioning accuracy.
